There are few sights and sounds as stirring as the pipes and drums. The question for
many is "where do I find a set of bagpipes," or, more importantly, "how do I
learn to play the pipes or drums?" Many assume that it would take years to
learn Highland piping or drumming or that it is incredibly difficult.
We all thought the same thing at one time as well. But the fact is, it can take just a few months to learn the basics of
either instrument and start playing with the band. This process will require
practice time on your part. It will take years to master your
instrument; however, you can play in the band as you progress.
Even if you don't currently read music or you are in your adult years, do not
let that deter you from learning the pipes or drums. Our band members have
started playing the pipes or drums while in their teens, 20's, 30's, 40's, and
50's! Unlike many types of musical groups, this is one that you can
perform with well into your retirement years.
What's more, we would like to help you achieve your goal. We are always interested in expanding the band, and we
will help teach you. Piping students will need to purchase a practice chanter
(about $50-$75) and pay for introductory lessons ($25 each). Drumming students
will need to invest in a drum practice pad (about $30) and pay for introductory
lessons.
Once you have graduated from your introductory lessons and have joined the band,
there are no membership dues or fees. Additionally, the band furnishes all
uniforms and drums. We also have several sets of bagpipes that we can loan
to beginning pipers.
In six months or so, you could be playing with us at one of our performances!
